Study of Motion

Gertrude Stein wrote,  “A rose by any other name smells as sweet.” But what if you had never seen a rose before? What would you make of it? That was the question I presented to a character I created for my Animation/Stop Motion class at Moore College of Art.  My creation, an animated character, has a plush stuffed animal appearance, with a round head and body with a wide mouth. I wanted to create a goofy guy who didn’t do much, who looked at the world in wonder, and who didn’t always understand what the objects around him represented. This character would harken back to old fashioned cartoons. Once I created the character, I added a few simple objects—a rose and a boulder. In a series of sketches my character picks up a mysterious object—a rose—and throws the petals away while keeping the thorns so that he can have teeth like everyone else. He doesn’t stop and smell the flowers first.
